Can Dialect Break Bricks?

I’ve really been enjoying the films of Rene Vienet, who took existing film and television footage and dubbed new sound on top of it. Vienet was part of the Situationalists in 60’s France, and had a rocky political activist past before that. He’s recognized for three “detournement” films (all archived and viewable on UbuWeb) CAN DIALECTS BREAK BRICKS? (1973), a kung-fu flick re-dubbed into a satire of socialism and revolutions, THE GIRLS OF KAMARE (1974), a chinese s&m porno film turned into a post-Marxist send-up of French politics, and the hilarious CHINESE, ONE MORE EFFORT IF YOU WANT TO BE REVOLUTIONARIES! (’77), which is considered his best, and is more similar to the later work of Guy Debord (the king of the Situationists), who’s films Vienet’s are often compared to. Vienet’s films are often thought of as later and less significant than Debord’s, but personally I find Vienet’s less-heavy work has more impact. (NOTE: Woody Allen’s WHAT’S UP TIGER LILY? pre-dates Vienet’s films by a few years, but not Debord’s).
