I was shocked and saddened to learn that Clifton Lively passed away unexpectedly last week. I have nothing but colorful, crazy memories of Clifton from when I knew him in NYC in the 90’s. He was a true individual — a proud New Orleanian living amongst kooky New Yorkers. He had a vivid knowledge of New Orleans history, and food (he was an avid and skilled cook), and was laugh-out-loud hilarious. He had a killer smile, and great style (he was one of the first people I knew to wear snakeskin cowboy boots, giant belt buckles and gimmie caps in East Village clubs and call it cool). He spent the last decade working at St. Mary’s Parrish in North Carolina, organizing events and chaperoning missionary trips (he apparently was even able to infuse a New Orleans flavor to that place). He was one of the most unabashedly smiley-est, genuine people I can remember. He enthusiastically opened my eyes to a lot of culture and ideas when I knew him (I remember one time him sitting me down in his apartment and forcing me to watch videos of every one of Tamara Dobson’s movies, long before anyone else I knew was into Blaxploitation films). He was always recommending authors and books. Thankfully through the internet we were able to reconnect a few times these last couple of years. Goodbye Clifton! I always thought very fondly of you, and feel honored to have known you. XOXO
