The Flying Lizards: Discography: Summertime Blues:

Summertime Blues / All Guitars
    7" single
(UK) November 1978 Virgin Records Ltd. (VS230) - Produced by David Cunningham for Piano Recordings

    Side A
      01) Summertime Blues  [2:54]  [E. Cochran / J. Capeheart] (Alberts)
    Side B
      02) All Guitars  [2:40]  [D. Cunningham] (Mushroom)

Sleeve notes:
"The first time I heard The Flying Lizards, almost a year ago, the country was in grave economic difficulties. Twelve months later The Lizards have brought their petulant minimalism to the public ear and the country is still in economic difficulties. Every new day admits of the mechanism of a gun."
    - Dave Fudger including a quotation from "On The Level" by Anthony Howell

Inscriptions in the Virgin UK version vinyl: Side A) "SYSTEMS MUSIC"  Side B) "FOR HOME DEFENSE"

Description:This deconstructed cover version of "Summertime Blues", coupled with it's abstract B-side, the was the first ever product by The Flying Lizards, released in 1978. Side A is identical to the version that would eventually appear on the first LP, except song fades out rather than ending in a crashing piano sound. B-side: "All Guitars" is a scrappy, abstract instrumental that uses de-tuned guitars and what sounds like snares and plastic buckets being used as percussion. Midway through the song, a very loud synthesizer tone (or maybe a tuba or french horn?) comes blaring into the mix.

Availability: Out of print collector's item. Hard to find.

Summertime Blues / Summertime Dub / All Guitars
    7" EP

      01) Summertime Blues  [2:54]  [E. Cochran / J. Capeheart]

      02) Summertime Dub  [3:00]  [E. Cochran / J. Capeheart]
      03) All Guitars  [2:40]

Inscription in the Missing Link version vinyl: b) "NEW ZEALAND"

Description: This Australian pressing of the first Flying Lizards release has "Summertime Blues", which is identical to the version on the first LP, except song fades out rather than ending in a crashing piano sound. B-side: "Summertime Dub" is  the second half of the song which appears on the 12"EP, but not the album. A primitive, cut-up, start/stop track "re-mix" with heavy echo and vocal back masking at the end. See above for description of "All Guitars". All sleeve graphics and notes identical to UK Virgin 7", except photo of Deborah is oddly reproduced in black & white. On back sleeve "bonus track summertime dub" is rubber stamped (on most copies) and is not listed on the record label.

Money / Summertime Blues
    12" EP
(US) 1979 Virgin Records, Inc. (DK4809) - Produced by David Cunningham
        - there is probably a UK version of this 12"EP, but I do not have the information

    Side A
      01) Money  [6:13, vocal]  [Barry Gordy Jr. / Janie Bradford]
    Side B
      02) Summertime Blues  [5:05, vocal]  [E. Cochran / J. Capeheart]

Sleeve notes:
Photography by Richard Rayner-Canham
A stereophonic record

Description:Long versions of songs are indeed different than album versions. The second half of this version of "Money" has some added samples and panning effects towards the end (and goes on longer), plus has a loud ray-gun sound that closes out the song. The second half of "Summertime Blues" adds a primitive, cut-up, start/stop track "re-mix" with heavy echo and vocal back masking at the end. These versions are identical to the two previous 7" versions (that were cut into two halves, on side A and B respectively). Same cover art as 7", just larger.

Availability: Out of print collector's item. Fairly easy to find, especially on the web.
